《TAIPEI TIMES》Smart glasses cheating to be punishable by admissions ban - 焦點

By Fion Khan / Staff writer, with CNA

University applicants caught cheating with electronic devices such as smart glasses during the General Scholastic Ability Test (GSAT) are to face severe consequences under new guidelines for the next academic year, including being barred from major university admission channels, the Joint Board of College Recruitment Commission said today.

Following recent incidents involving candidates wearing smart glasses during examinations, the College Entrance Examination Center has raised penalties across all tests.

Starting from Aug. 1 next year, anyone caught wearing or carrying smart glasses — regardless of whether they are used — would be considered cheating and receive a score of zero for that subject, the center’s examination committee said.

Candidates who refuse to surrender devices or cooperate with inspection would face immediate disqualification, the center said.

Disqualified candidates would be barred from the Multi-Star program and individual application, and would not be admitted to any department that takes the GSAT results into account, commission executive secretary Wang Hung-jen (王泓仁) said.

Meanwhile, students found to have submitted false information during the university admission process — whether discovered before or after admission, prior to registration, during enrollment or after graduation — would face severe consequences, Wang said.

Penalties include revocation of admission, expulsion, recovery of degree certificates and degree cancelation, he added.

Severe cases would be referred to judicial authorities, he said, warning applicants not to take chances, as violations could have far-reaching consequences for candidates' academic futures and reputations.

For the next academic year, 15,518 places are available through the Multi-Star program and 50,606 through the individual application channel.

The examination-based placement channel has an approved quota of 20,575 slots, with final figures to be augmented by unused quotas rolled over from other pathways.

English is the most commonly used subject for screening requirements under the Multi-Star program and the individual application channel, with 985 and 1,090 departments respectively requiring candidates to meet a minimum score in the subject.

The GSAT for English Listening is used as a screening requirement by 29 departments under the Multi-Star program and 27 under individual application.

Some departments also incorporate results from the Advanced Placement Computer Science (APCS) test into their first-stage screening, either as a minimum requirement or through weighted screening, or into designated examinations in the second stage of individual application.

These include 50 departments offering an APCS group and 41 offering an information security group.

Under the examination-based placement channel, Chinese is the most frequently evaluated GSAT subject, required by 1,497 departments and divisions, while 19 require the English Listening Test.

While taking individual GSAT subjects remains optional, the commission urged candidates to take all subjects required, tested or weighted by the departments to which they intend to apply.
