The northeast monsoon is expected to strengthen, bringing rain and cooler temperatures to northern and eastern Taiwan, with temperatures in low-lying areas likely to drop to as low as 16°C from tomorrow through Friday, independent meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮) said yesterday.
Rain fell in northern and eastern Taiwan yesterday, with some areas seeing heavier showers, Wu, an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University, said in his daily weather column.
As moisture shifts south today, rain in northern Taiwan is expected to ease, although Hualien and Taitung are expected to remain rainy, he said.
There could be isolated afternoon showers in mountainous areas of southern Taiwan, he said.
From tomorrow to Friday, the west side of Taiwan is expected to remain mostly sunny and stable, while eastern Taiwan would be partly cloudy with occasional isolated showers, he said.
Northern Taiwan should be comfortable, while southern Taiwan would remain slightly warm, he said.
Radiational cooling would bring cooler mornings, with temperatures at Taipei’s weather station expected to fall to about 20°C and the lowest temperatures in the lowlands across Taiwan dropping to about 16°C, he said.
The large difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures could make mornings feel particularly cool, he added.
On Friday and Saturday, moisture is expected to increase slightly on the windward side, bringing isolated showers to northern and eastern Taiwan, he said.
The rest of the nation should remain mostly sunny and stable, with temperatures in northern Taiwan falling slightly, he said.
The Central Weather Administration said Typhoon Choi-wan was over waters southeast of Japan and was expected to move northward before turning north-northeast.
Another tropical depression east of Guam was expected to move north before turning east and developing into a typhoon yesterday, while Hurricane Nolo in the eastern Pacific crossed the International Date Line and became a typhoon in the western Pacific.
That could leave three typhoons simultaneously active in the western Pacific, but none is expected to pose a threat to Taiwan, the agency said.
